“What the fuck?” Patrick was stunned after reading the introductory paragraph for the class entitled “Chemical and Limits Manipulation, CALM Therapy. Using the body’s own chemicals in conjunction with providing a safe and controlled routine to successfully combat the negative symptoms of depression, PTSD and chronic stress.”

He sat back in his chair and the grating squeak from the shift of his weight filled the silent and starkly barren interior of the border station.

He stopped reading after the summary of the class. It was a lot to take in. Jordan needed this? She seemed like the most stable, capable woman he’d ever met. It didn’t make sense. But he reserved judgment and picked up the rest of the sheaf of papers and continued reading until he’d read every last word, studied every diagram and felt like he had a good understanding of this CALM Therapy.

Theoretically the home dynamic allowed her to shed her responsibilities, her burdens, and just be, without judgment, without stress and without having to be responsible for anything except doing what she was told. Then, occasionally, she needed the escape and release the sessions provided.

The structured home environment of the therapy was similar to parenting. Jordan told his mother her parents were dead. At the time, he knew that was a lie. Her parents were still alive, but he didn’t challenge her. Then later, he’d forgotten to ask about it. He leaned forward and called up the contact information for Jordan’s parents on his compad, wrote it down on a tiny piece of paper and then stuffed it in his front pocket. He’d have Shane check these people out.

So all these years this Dennis guy had been hitting her and bossing her around, and she wanted him to do it. He’d been helping her by doing it.

Patrick understood why Shane currently sat in a dark alley waiting for him to return. But after reading about the brain-chemical science and the cathartic properties of the sessions as well as the dramatic statistical increase in reports of feelings of wellbeing, it made sense. Shane was right. It would have sounded much more deviant if he’d tried to explain in a sentence or two.

Jordan had suffered a break down so severe she either didn’t know, or she didn’t care, if she was hurting herself. She’d lost it because she didn’t have the structure and the sessions.

Sessions she’d needed badly due to the deaths of her two friends.

She’d probably been living this way since she was twenty-one. He shook his head. Five years.

He looked back over the papers. There was almost always a sexual component to the sessions. Those hormones rushing during climax would meet up with endorphins from the pain, and the adrenaline to boot, essentially creating a perfect storm.

Yet she’d told him she’d never had sex with Dennis. He supposed sexual stimulation, orgasms, did not necessarily mean fucking.

Now, Shane would be doing this for her. Patrick propped his elbows on the desk and put his head in his hands.
